DU Supports Haiti Relief
1/27/2010

Dear Brothers,

Last week we honored the extraordinary social justice contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In one of his famous speeches, "Strength to Love," he said, "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." He challenged all of us to step out of our comfort zone to reach out to others who are facing some great challenge or controversy, and offer them comfort, love and support.

Nowhere on the planet is there more challenge and controversy than in Haiti.

It has been said that "four things support the world: the learning of the wise, the justice of the great, the prayers of the good, and the valor of the brave."

Haiti mapWe are a great fraternity of men who have as one of our principals the "Advancement of Justice." We declare our motto often, "Dikaia Upotheke, Justice, Our Foundation." Justice is the firm and continuous expectation that every human is treated with consistency, fairness and kindness.

Brothers, this is the time for us to step up out of our comfort and put some action in our "Advancement of Justice." It is time for us to stand up and show our greatness to a small country facing challenge and controversy beyond measure. It's time to put some action in our justice.

A former British Prime Minister and novelist, Benjamin Disraeli, once said, "Sir, I say that justice is truth in action."

Please put some truth in our justice, by contributing through Delta Upsilon's efforts for the Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund.  True justice would be making some form of sacrifice in our giving. Let's show the people of Haiti that there are good young men in the United States and Canada who have sacrificed a social event, or some comfort, and have given a major gift. That is justice in action.

Fraternally,
