DU supports National Hazing PRevention Week

Sept. 18, 2017 – Sept. 18-22, 2017 is National Hazing Prevention Week, and Delta Upsilon is one of its many fraternity/sorority supporters.

Sponsored by HazingPrevention.Org, National Hazing Prevention Week (NHPW) is an opportunity for campuses, schools, communities, organizations and individuals to raise awareness about the problem of hazing, education others about hazing, and promote the prevention of hazing. Throughout the week, Delta Upsilon is asking chapters to take part in hazing prevention events hosted on campus or to host an event themselves.

Delta Upsilon’s Senior Director of Educational Programs Noah Borton was also recently published by The Chronicle of Higher Education writing about the importance of creating an intentional education plan can create change in regard to hazing.

Delta Upsilon is the first non-secret, non-hazing fraternity, and hazing prevention programming is prevalent across the Fraternity’s educational curriculum. For instance, the Associate Member Education Program focuses on building brotherhood without hazing; educational programs like Presidents Academy, Regional Leadership Academy and the Leadership Institute feature hazing prevention programs; and all associate members are asked to take the online GreekLifeEdu course before Initiation. GreekLifeEdu educates on hazing, alcohol and sexual assault.

Data from Delta Upsilon’s Membership Outcomes Assessment shows that DU’s hazing prevention efforts are working. Across the undergraduate membership, members’ hazing tolerance has decreased significantly. In addition, comparing Year One to Year Two data, thanks to the Associate Member Education Program that launched in fall 2016, associate members have scored better in a number of constructs related to hazing. Associate members reported increases in self-esteem and brotherhood based on belonging, as well as decreases in alcohol use, social status importance and hazing tolerance.

Throughout National Hazing Prevention Week, DU chapter can show their support by doing the following:

  • Adding a Delta Upsilon NHPW Facebook frame to their profile picture
  • Tagging DU and NHPW in social media posts using #NHPW17
  • Attending a hazing prevention event on campus
  • Hosting its own hazing prevention event
  • Reviewing and rededicating themselves to DU’s Four Founding Principles and Loss Prevention Policies
