Stock and IRA Gifts
Building Better Men while avoiding capital gains tax or satisfying your required minimum IRA distribution.
Gifting appreciated stock is a fantastic way for a donor to invest in DU’s mission of Building Better Men, while also receiving significant tax benefits. Because the DUEF is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, gifts of stock avoid capital gains tax, and the donor receiving an income tax deduction for the full fair-market-value of the stock at the time of the gift.
In order to receive the full charitable benefits of a stock gift, donors must transfer appreciated securities directly to the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation. Please work with your broker to initiate a charitable stock transfer using the electronic instructions found in this document and explained below:

CHARITABLE IRA GIFTS
If you have an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) and are over the age of 72 (or were at least 70 ½ before January 1, 2020), a gift to the DUEF from your IRA will have many benefits. Along with supporting the educational development of today’s DU undergraduates, a gift made directly from your IRA is considered a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). The QCD can be counted toward satisfying your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) for the year, and the QCD is excluded from your taxable income, which may keep you in a lower tax bracket. The QCD provision is now a permanent part of the Internal Revenue Code.
To fully qualify for these benefits, gifts from your IRA must be transferred directly to the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation. This is usually accomplished by requesting your IRA custodian issue a check from your IRA made payable to the DUEF. (Do not take the distribution yourself and then try to make the gift to the DUEF, as you will forfeit the tax benefit on the initial withdrawal.) Below are transfer instructions to share with your IRA custodian:

“My wife, Debbie, and I have chosen to give a Qualified Charitable Deduction directly from our IRA to the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation to help the Fraternity continue Building Better Men. The tax benefits of a gift from our IRA allowed us to make an even larger contribution to the Foundation without stressing our retirement cash flow, and we encourage other donors to consider this giving option. Regardless of the tax benefits, we firmly believe that the DUs of today need to learn how to put our Four Founding Principles into practice. Friendship, character, culture and justice are values that improve the individual and make our world a better place, and we are honored to continue our support of the programming funded by the Foundation.”
