Though Delta Upsilon was founded in 1834, it wasn't until the 1880s that the idea of a Fraternity central office was discussed. It was at the 1882 Convention in Ann Arbor, Michigan that the Convention asked that a headquarters officially be established in New York City.

This safe was purchased in 1882 to house important Fraternity documents at the Fraternity's first headquarters. When the headquarters moved to Indianapolis in 1969, the safe made the journey and continued to be used. The safe was officially "retired" in 2001—ending its 119-year career—when the International Headquarters building was renovated.

Today, it remains on display at IHQ in Indianapolis.
