When the Social Fraternity was founded in 1834, the Founders felt no need for a membership badge. By 1837, they changed their mind, believing a common badge would bring greater loyalty among members, and a golden key was decided upon. However, as the Anti-Secret Confederation was formed, each chapter had its own badge design. It wasn't until 1949 that the members of the A.S.C. would choose the Union Chapter's design as the official badge design.
This A.S.C. key was used from 1849-1858 and was the Fraternity's first common badge. In the center, A.S.C. and the year it was formed are featured prominently. A scroll at the top and bottom contain the Fraternity's first motto: "Ouden Adelon," which means "nothing secret."
This particular A.S.C. key on display in the International Headquarters is from Edward "Edwin" Davis, Union 1851, and is the oldest item in DU's archives.
