An Important Update on DU's International Headquarters

Letter sent to all Delta Upsilon members on Aug. 13, 2026 

For more than five decades, our headquarters building has served as a home for Delta Upsilon. Since building the property in the late 1960s, generations of staff, volunteers, alumni and undergraduate brothers have walked its halls, held meetings within its walls, and contributed to the work of building and strengthening our Fraternity.

For many, the building represents far more than bricks and mortar. It carries memories of friendships, service, leadership and the lifelong bonds that define our brotherhood. We recognize and deeply respect the sentimental value the headquarters holds for so many members of Delta Upsilon, especially those close to longtime Executive Director Wilford A. Butler, Western Michigan ’61, for whom the building was dedicated in 2010.

After significant discussion and careful evaluation, the Fraternity’s leadership has determined that it is in the long-term best interest of Delta Upsilon to transition from ownership of the headquarters building.

This decision was not made lightly. Over time, the operational needs of the organization have changed substantially. Today, far fewer staff members are based in Indianapolis, and the building no longer effectively serves the day-to-day needs of the Fraternity. At the same time, the facility requires substantial ongoing investment and upkeep that is increasingly difficult to justify given its limited operational use.

The building was recently listed for sale, and Delta Upsilon is working with realtors to find leased office space in Indianapolis that better aligns with the current needs of the organization. This approach allows the Fraternity to remain rooted in Indianapolis while operating in a more efficient, flexible and financially responsible manner.

While we may soon no longer retain ownership of the physical building, we remain fully committed to preserving and honoring the history, traditions and artifacts entrusted to our care.

Delta Upsilon will partner with HistoryIT to digitize and preserve our history. Through this partnership:

• All historical artifacts, archives, memorabilia and records will be carefully preserved, cataloged and professionally protected.
• Collections will be stored in secure, climate-controlled environments appropriate for long-term conservation.
• Most importantly, we will create a best-in-class digital museum and historical archive that will allow brothers across the world to access, explore and engage with Delta Upsilon’s history in ways that were never previously possible. This will include a digital recognition strategy that honors many lifelong DU Educational Foundation donors whose generosity will continue Building Better Men for generations to come.

Rather than limiting our history to those who could physically visit a single building in Indianapolis, this initiative will make our story more accessible to every member of our brotherhood, undergraduate and alumnus alike. Photographs, documents, composites, artifacts, chapter histories and significant moments from throughout our history will be digitally preserved and available to future generations of Delta Upsilon men.

This is not a step away from our history. It is an investment in preserving it responsibly and sharing it more broadly.

As we move through this process, we will continue to communicate openly with our members and provide updates regarding preservation efforts, historical initiatives and future plans.
