Substance-free Housing Waiver Chapters

Delta Upsilon is dedicated to providing safe, supportive environments in which we build better men. We strive to make our chapters and campus communities stronger.

SUBSTANCE-FREE HOUSING WAIVER PROGRAM

During the 2022 Leadership Institute, the International Fraternity Board of Directors extended the waiver program for the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 academic years as part of the Substance-free Housing Policy. This waiver program will grant chapters who qualify additional time to plan for full policy implementation. Chapters without a waiver must implement the full Substance-free Housing Policy.

The extension will grant chapters who apply for, and qualify, a waiver to continue to have only alcoholic beverages under 15% ABV in chapter facilities according to Fraternity policies while continuing to plan for full Substance-free Housing Policy implementation by Aug. 1, 2024. Only chapters that previously received the waiver during the 2022-2023 academic year are eligible for the waiver extension. Chapters that qualify for the 2023-2024 academic year have already been notified of the reapplication process.

Only those chapters that have previously received the waiver during the 2021-2022 academic year will be eligible for the waiver extension. Chapters on a campus where they believe implementation is comparatively more difficult may apply on a case-by-case basis.

The following is allowed for waiver chapters:

  • The chapter can host up to six events with alcoholic beverages (under 15% ABV) in common areas of the chapter facility per year (no more than four events per semester/term). These events must be registered and pre-approved (at least seven days in advance) by the International Fraternity.
  • Brothers over the legal age can possess and consume alcoholic beverages (under 15% ABV) only in bedrooms when events are not being held. (No alcohol is to be consumed in bedrooms regardless of a person’s age during events.)
  • Allows for up to six alumni events per year. These events must be registered and pre-approved by International Fraternity (at least seven days in advance) and have a third-party vendor or follow DU's BYOB guidelines, as well as all other Fraternity and university policy.
  • Non-registered/informal events with alcohol in common spaces are not permitted.
